It’s Important to Follow a Job Search Process

When you are learning to play an instrument or drive a car, there is a learning process that helps guarantee your success. The same holds true for a successful Job Search. There are three main elements beginning with Planning, then Search & Connect and finally, Interviewing. Throughout your job search you may choose to change your targets or adjust your resume, which can take you back to the Planning stage of your Search.
It is important that you don’t skip steps when you are conducting a Job Search. Soon you will notice changes in the design and functionality of our Career Portal. Our new design will walk you through the sixteen stages of a successful job search and provide information on how to successfully complete each step. If you are not participating on our weekly Job Seeker Webinars, sign up for the next call scheduled. The training is great but the most important part of these calls is answering your questions or helping you solve problems that you may be facing.

HOT TOPIC
Informational interviews can lead to job interviews. The Job Seeker Webinar that took place this week titled "The Who, What, When, Where and Why of Informational Interviews" addressed the importance of informational interviews. If you did not have a chance to participate, visit our career portal early next week once we have posted the recorded webinar and handouts, and follow the advice shared.
If you have not been successful in landing interviews, the informational interview can help you obtain referrals and often turn into job interviews. Informational interviews should be an important element in your search process.

TIP FOR THE WEEK
It is important for you to review your job search every Friday afternoon. Review what you have done to progress your job search and then ask yourself three questions:
  1. What am I doing RIGHT? The 20% of your actions that provide you with 80% of your results (Commit to doing more of those actions)
  2. What is wasting my time? (Stop doing those things immediately)
  3. What new idea can I implement to improve my chances at finding a job?
(You can’t do things the same way and expect different results. Many NEW IDEAS are shared during our free Weekly Job Seeker Webinars that we provide for you. If you cannot attend, listen to the recordings of these Webinars that are located in our Career Portal Library. The various materials shared work in TODAY’S Job Market)

The job market is beginning to change, the economy is changing and it is time for you to change the way you are conducting your search process. It’s still not easy to find a job, but more employers are hiring and it is the job seeker who puts momentum in their search that will be hired.

Contact all the companies who have interviewed you in the past several months (Not through a Search Firm, of course). They may have additional opportunities available.  Send your resume and cover letter directly to hiring authorities in your targeted companies. Update your professional profile on your Social Media sites and join discussion and networking groups.

Every day focus on how you can get yourself in front of a hiring authority. Now is the time to commit to spending at least 35 hours a week on your search if you are not employed and 10 hours a week if you are employed.

MUST READS
When is the last time you adjusted or revised your cover letter. If you are not scheduling interviews it could be your cover letter. This week we’re going to discuss how to write a cover letter when you are aware of a specific opportunity.

Express your confidence in performing the tasks of the job and your high level of interest. You then take the requirements of the job and list them on the left hand side of your cover letter and then list the credentials you possess that match their needs on the right hand side. End your cover letter with an exact timeframe for your follow up call.

Read your cover letter today and consider the following...If you were the hiring authority reading your cover letter, would you set up the interview with you? If you answered no, it’s time to read your cover letters and make adjustments to improve your chances of landing interviews.

TIP FOR THE WEEK
Your expectations and attitude have a tremendous impact on your ability to conduct a successful job search. If you are negative and stressed out, you are actually hurting your chances of finding your next job. I hear job seekers often say "if I just had a job I’d be happy". Unfortunately, hiring authorities want to hire individuals who ARE happy and possess a positive attitude.

I’d like to share a quote with you from Denis Waitley "Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace and gratitude." Do your best each day to focus on what is good or right in your life. It will help you maintain the attitude and demeanor that are most desired by your future employer!

The Only Way to Improve Your Interviewing Skills is by Role Playing

There are many reasons why role playing may not be something you can accomplish:

  • You don’t know anyone who can role play with you
  • You are currently employed and don’t want people to know you are in a search
  • You find it too embarrassing to get comfortable with the process
  • You don’t want to be judged by someone who is not a hiring authority
If any of these describe your situation, you have another option in order to enjoy the benefits of role playing. You can write down sample interview questions which I have included later in this presentation. Begin to record yourself as you ask the questions and provide your answers.
When you listen to yourself, you can pick out your strengths and weaknesses as you critique the recording. Listen to the recording as if you are a hiring authority and rate yourself on a scale of 1 - 10. Continue this process until you are scoring a 9 or 10 in most areas.
Once you become comfortable recording your interview, you then need to role play with family, friends, neighbors, individuals in Job Clubs or anyone else who is willing to role play with you. It’s important to realize that if you are NOT comfortable role playing, you are probably NOT comfortable with interviewing. You can delay the live role playing with another person, but you really can’t avoid it.
The most qualified person does not necessarily get hired, it’s the person who interviews the best. When you think of how difficult it is to schedule interviews, you want to be at your best during the interview process.
Hiring authorities react to your ability to:
  • Make a great first impression
  • Answer questions effectively
  • Show your personality
  • Overcome objections
  • Stand out from other job seekers
  • Ask the best questions
  • Have the interviewer "envision" you in the position
  • Show your confidence level and interest in the position
  • Close strong
  • Set up the follow-up process
The more you record your interviews and role play with others, the better you will interview which will result in job offers.
