My Gift To You!

If I could give you a gift this Holiday Season it would be the gift of high self-esteem.  A Job Search, especially a lengthy job search can take it’s toll, on even the most confident person.
Self-esteem is a term used in psychology to reflect your appraisal or your own worth. Self-esteem encompasses beliefs and emotions.
It is normal for you to identify with your career. When you are not employed, your belief system and emotions change and can actually sabotage your ability to find a job.
Take time this Holiday Season to remember that you are not defined by your employment status. Reflect back on a time when you were confident and at the top of your "game". That is the person who needs to conduct your search. Your cover letters, phone calls and interviews will greatly improve when you KNOW you are the best person for the job!

Career Advisor 12/16/2010

Have you set 10 non-negotiable goals for 2011? If you are going to succeed at your job search, now is the time to identify what is most important to you in the coming year. When you have a clear picture of what you are attempting to achieve, it will keep you motivated to put additional effort into your search.
The problem with most goals is they get the same attention as New Year’s Resolutions. Most are forgotten in a matter of days or weeks. This year write down 10 goals for yourself in various areas of your life which could include: career, health, financial, personal, spiritual, philanthropic, education and any other area that is important to you.
Write down your goal, followed by 4 or 5 action items which are specific steps you will take to achieve each goal you have set. Next, date each action item. When you write goals down, identify steps and date them, you have greatly improved the probability that they will become your reality in the coming year.
The important last step is to post them where you can see and read them daily. When you get frustrated in your search, keep reading them to stay motivated. Let the people you care about know your goals so they can also help you achieve them.

TIP FOR THE WEEK
Remember the Holidays are about "who" you are, not about "what" you can give to others. If you are not working, you should not add to your debt.
You can buy containers at a dollar store and fill them with 52 memories that your friends and family can read throughout the coming year. All this costs is one dollar for the container and your time!
Another easy gift idea is to write down your cherished family recipes and share them with others.
You can also donate your "time". Give certificates to your family members to babysit for them, help them with gardening or snow shoveling, cook a meal for them, or offer any other services they would appreciate.

Arrive at Your Interview Prepared

Many times you have several versions of your resume.  Make sure you take copies of the same resume you originally sent to them to your interview. Bring copies for everyone involved in the interviewing process. Always bring one or two extra copies of your resume. Never assume they have the copy you originally sent. You want to provide each person in the interview a folder containing this information. Print your name and contact information on the tab of your folders.  This will position you above the candidates who do not bring their resume to their interview.
In addition you will want to bring:

  • List of references (3 past supervisors, 1 personal)
  • The list should include their work and home phone numbers, cell phone if available and email address.
  • Reference letters (if you have them)
  • Performance reviews (if they are stellar)
  • Grade transcript (if you are a recent student)
  • Writing sample (if written communication skills are a requirement of the position)
  • Portfolio (if the position is "creative")
When you are inquiring about the next step in the process, you take out your planner and write down the date or enter it in your calendar on your phone which is set on mute. This will impress the interviewer and they may note that you are organized.

TIP FOR THE WEEK
You need to prepare for the question "what is your desired salary" before filling out an application or scheduling an interview. Often a hiring authority will hold you to the salary you listed when you filled out their application form whether in person or online. Whenever possible, put the word "negotiable" or "open" rather than listing a specific amount. If you do list an amount, make sure you research the salary range if you want to be considered for the position. Always put plus signs behind your current salary as well as desired salary. When you are asked about the plus signs, you explain that those represent your benefits, bonuses and incentives. When you are extended an offer you plan to review the entire package, not just the salary offered. This will allow you to negotiate more effectively when an offer is extended.

Put Your Job Search in High Gear

Now is the time to put your job search in high gear. Many employers were holding back until after the mid-term elections. Now that the results are in and both political parties have a more equal representation in Congress, companies may begin to hire. Corporate profits have been solid this year and many companies have hiring budgets they have not spent. Do NOT hold off your job search until after the first of the year when competition will be at it’s highest. During the months of November and December you have less competition and employers are motivated to hire before the end of the year. It’s time to double your search activities and re-contact everyone in your network. Consider sending out Thanksgiving greetings thanking everyone for their referrals and assistance. This will also keep your name in front of them and make them realize you are still in a job search. The best holiday gift you can give yourself is a new job. The only way t! o accomplishment this is to increase your job search efforts.

TIP FOR THE WEEK

If you want to stand out from your competition, remember to "audition" during job interviews. Too often interviews are a series of questions and answers and not much else. You want to audition for the role you will play in their company. You want to stress your accomplishments and do everything you can to have them envision you in the job. It is also important to show confidence in your abilities and a high level of interest. Interviewing can be compared to the screen test that actors and actresses must complete in order to be chosen for a role in a movie. It’s the exact same concept during an interview. You want the hiring authority to see and hear why you should be their choice!

It’s Time to Get Aggressive in Your Search Efforts

Company Executives are given a hiring budget each year in order to attract top talent. Many companies have not spent their budget. Sometimes if they don’t spend their budget, it may be decreased the following year.

You may be wondering how this affects you? What this means is that companies will be motivated to hire before the end of the year. Too many job seekers decide to "wait until after the first of the year" to put velocity behind their search efforts. As a result, you have less competition right now.

Send out resumes, follow up on all interviews, get your resume in the hands of hiring authorities and work the social networks. Your efforts WILL pay off!

With the release of the movie "Social Network" it seems appropriate to discuss social networks and your job search. Regardless of technology, the best way to land a job is still by having someone who already works at the company mention your name. Each year CareerXroads surveys large firms about where they find new hires. Since 2005 the top resource has held steady - 27% of all new hires came from employee referrals. Many of these referrals can be the result of properly utilizing contacts through Social Networks. Take time to connect with people who can open doors for you, take time to join groups in the profession you are targeting and control the information that appears on your profile. It’s important to note that many employers are now reviewing your social networking sites before they make a job offer. You want your information to enhance your chances of obtaining a new job - not hinder them! Read more: http://www.time.com/time/business/article/0,8599,1903083,00.html#ixzz10T7fnM00

Get Your Resume In The Hands Of The Right Person

The way to identify the "RIGHT PERSON" is to find the person within one of your targeted companies who would be either your boss or your boss’s boss! Let’s assume this person’s title is Accounting Manager because you are seeking a position as an Auditor. Many times you can find contact names on the company website. Many executives also have extensive profiles on various Social Networks. You need to learn how to navigate the Internet to find the individuals you are targeting.

If you don’t have the name, you call into the targeted company and ask for the "correct spelling" of their Accounting Manager’s name. When you ask for the correct spelling the receptionist assumes you already have the name and that you are just clarifying the spelling and she spells their name for you. You also want to confirm the contact's exact title. If the gatekeeper is being cooperative you might also ask for their direct line, so that you have this information for your follow up call.

Often job seekers speak with an uncooperative gatekeeper who will not give out information. Here is an important fact to remember: Gatekeepers typically go to lunch between 1 - 2 p.m. During that time, there is an Administrative Assistant who is covering the front desk and may not be happy to be filling in for the Receptionist. Often they will give out the information without asking any questions. Be nice to the gatekeeper and they will be more receptive to your call.

When you are in a job search, you need to use any and all resources to help you obtain interviews. This approach helps you target specific companies and hiring authorities and needs both your time and focus. Submit your resumes on a much broader scale by clicking here to try one of the new services we’re offering in our Career Portal:

Networking Quiz

Networking is one of the most effective ways to find a new job in the current job market. You never know who can open a door that may lead to an interview and job offer. Over 50% of job seekers accepting jobs are the result of their networking efforts.

Take this short quiz to rate your current network. Rate yourself on a scale of 1 - 5 (with 5 being the highest rating).

1. You add at least three individuals to your network each week
2. You attend events that expose you to possible hiring authorities
3. Your family and friends understand you are in a job search
4. Ex-employers and coworkers are part of your network
5. You are passing out resume cards to everyone you meet
6. You volunteer your time and simultaneously network
7. You actively interact with other job seekers
8. Your network is helping you schedule interviews

If you scored from 30-40
You have a strong network and you have targeted people who can provide you with referrals that result in interviews. Keep up the good work.

If you scored from 20-30
Your networking efforts are average and you need to improve the level of person you are including in your network. You also want to set a goal of adding a minimum of 3 people to your network every week.

If you scored under 20
You need to put much more attention to building your network. You need to login to our Career Portal, click on Networking Icon in the Library and read all Networking articles and listen to all of the Training Webinars covering this topic.

If you have not ordered your FREE 100 Resume Cards - you need to do this today. It is difficult and often cumbersome to carry your resume with you, but the resume cards fit in any pocket, wallet or purse and serve the same purpose.

Listen to what other Job Seekers are saying:

"After attending numerous webinars ad nauseum, and having very low expectations, I was pleasantly surprised by the refreshing amount of quality info I received from it last Thursday! You see, the problem with job hunting in this economy is basically each HR expert is spewing out the same old rhetoric. But I learned a lot this time, gleaning nuggets of information; and for this, I am very grateful. What this also does for me is, energizes and renews my efforts, as it is way too easy to get discouraged and complacent in this economy, exacerbated by the highly competitive field I am in - creative. Thanks again for all the useful information...Now...to get busy and use it all!" Regards, Rhonda M.

"I just wanted to thank you for the excellent calls that you do each week for us job seekers. I am doing all that I can to get job offers with your guidance. Your advice and overall positive attitude has really kept me going in this really tough market." Mike L.

Is A Glass Holding You Back?

Recently I heard a story of the flea and the glass. You’re probably wondering what the story has to do with you. I will explain how this experiment could explain what is holding you back in your career.

Scientists were experimenting with fleas. The fleas were put on a table and jumped 12 inches high without any problems. The scientists then put a tall glass over the fleas and they only jumped 3 inches high. They repeated this process for 30 days and each day the fleas only jumped 3 inches high. They then took the glass away and guess what happened? The flea only jumped 3 inches high.
Can you identify your glass? Is it a lack of self confidence? Is it the fear of failure or the fear of success? Could it be your financial conditioning? Does your glass represent bad habits you’ve developed? Does your glass represent your tendency to procrastinate? Does it represent the fact that you don’t set aggressive goals for yourself? Does it represent the fact that you don’t know your numbers, so you don’t know what RESULTS you need on a daily basis?

The “glass” could also represent people who are negative in your life. It could be people who are opinionated about what you CAN or CAN NOT accomplish. You need to classify these influences as “NOISE”, and ignore them as much as possible.

If you want to advance your career, you need to make changes. Identifying what it is that holds you back is a great first step in realizing a higher level of success.

For the next 30 days….

Identify the NOISE in your life.
Identify three things you do that are a major waste of your time and stop doing them.
Identify the 20% of your actions that provides 80% of your results - and do more of those activities.

Once you are “aware” of your glass, you can remove it and then there is no limit to how high you can jump!

Career Advisor: July 9, 2010

Starting today, don’t listen to, watch or read the news. It’s important for you to realize that "good news" does not sell advertising or attract audiences. The job market is beginning to turn around and many companies are hiring. In the past 12 months, many companies cut too many jobs and now it is negatively impacting their profits. You need to expect to succeed and focus on the companies who are doing well. You also need to ignore the "noise" in your life. Often family and friends do not mean to be negative, but their comments can really bring you down. Make a conscious effort to ignore negative comments from people as much as possible. Surround yourself with positive people, network with individuals in your targeted field and wake up each morning ready to schedule another interview or accept a job offer!

TIP FOR THE WEEK

It’s time to take any energy that you may be spending on "worrying" and put it to good use. I received an email today and part of it read - "When you worry and hurry through your day, it is like an unopened gift thrown away." How many unopened gifts have you thrown away? It can be challenging to keep your job search on track, but your success depends on it! Worrying about being unemployed or worrying about your bills could hinder your ability to land a new job. The next time you’re worrying about a problem, stop yourself and focus on possible solutions. This will help you keep your job search on the right track.

Do holidays affect your job search? The bad news is that it may be more difficult to reach hiring authorities because they have taken time off. The good news is most job seekers put their search on hold which means less competition for you.

Fourth of July holiday celebrations usually include fireworks, picnics and parades. These are all opportunities to subtly network. You never know which family member, friend or acquaintance could introduce you to your next employer. Too often job seekers don’t attend events because they are unemployed and feel uncomfortable when the "what are you doing now?" question is asked. You should smile and say "I’m a free agent on the open job market and it has really been an exciting journey." People will be more likely to refer you if you don’t come across desperate or negative. Enjoy your holiday and see how many new people you can meet who may assist you in your Job Search!

TIP FOR THE WEEK
If your job search efforts are not providing you with results or even interviews, take time this week to review your activities. It’s important that you send out resumes and make follow-up telephone calls daily. If you are not currently employed, your full-time job is your job search. If you are working you should dedicate at least 10-15 hours per week to your search.

Re-contact every individual who interviewed you to see if there are any new opportunities that match your credentials. The person they hired may have accepted a counter-offer or may not have worked out well in the position. You want to keep your name and credentials in front of hiring authorities throughout your search. You never know when a new position could become available at one of your targeted firms. Don’t let your resume get lost in the shuffle - make follow up contacts.

HOT TOPIC

If you are seeking a career in a NEW field or profession, it’s important that you realize the transferable skills you may possess. The following are five of those skills:
  • Coping with deadline pressures - Prove to your prospective employer that you can function effectively and meet deadlines even when the timeframe is notably hurried.
  • Negotiating - Discuss where you have been able to resolve differences between individuals or groups.
  • Speaking - You will be perceived as a leader if you can talk publicly, prepare remarks, and effectively present ideas. If this is not a comfort zone for you think about joining Toastmasters.
  • Writing - Writing effectively is a skill most employers desire. Write letters to the editor of every publication you read. Write a newsletter and have samples you could share during an interview.
  • Organizing/Coordinating - If you have organized an event or managed projects it is assumed you know how to delegate tasks and achieve goals. Begin with organizing your own life, files, records and important documents. Prosperity is never attracted to disorganization and neither are job opportunities.

World Cup Job Seeker

If there was a World Cup for Job Seekers, would you be a contender? The World Cup draws competitors from across the globe. Most of these athletes have prepared for years fine tuning their skills, physical and mental abilities, agility and endurance.

The competition you face as a Job Seeker is increased due to the Internet advertising available job opportunities to a global audience. World Cup Broadcasters keep referring to the favored teams, the dullest teams, the teams who need the most help and the most energetic teams. Two countries blamed their lackluster performance on the artificial turf.

If someone had to describe your job search efforts this past week, would they describe you as the favored to get a job offer, the dullest, the person needing the most help or the most energetic? If you did NOT achieve positive results this past week, did you evaluate what YOU could change or did you blame it on the artificial turf?

The African vuvuzela has been a distraction for broadcasters as well as some of the athletes and fans. What has distracted you this past week? Are you tuning out distractions and putting the same effort into your job search as an athlete would put in for a major competition?

If your answer is NO - today is the day to refocus your commitment to your search. Employers are hiring and you need to prepare, fine tune your skills, tune out distractions and focus on scheduling interviews.

Today's Tip:  Body language is a very important element of any interview. Your words may be right on target, but your body language could prevent you from being hired. Counter Offer: Remember, It's a Business Decision

As the hiring starts to turn in a positive direction, I wanted to remind you that acceting a Counter Offer can be, and in most instances is, a BAD IDEA.

Always remember that leaving a job is about making a business decision. It is not personal. You may have a great relationship with your manager or co-workers and if they are just as much a friend as a co-worker or Manager, they should remain your friend even after you leave your organization.

Manager’s have one common goal, that is to increase production, motivate and lead employees to be the best they can be and make money for their organization.

If you are the type of employee who contributes to the bottom line of any organization you are consider a valuable employee.

A few things that run through their mind when they hear a person is leaving their organization:

“I can’t believe this is happening. I have done so much for this person”
“This couldn’t be happening at a worse time, I already have other openings”
“This is going to affect my bonus goals for the department”
“This will not look good for my review coming up with my boss”
“Maybe I can give then a raise or a bigger bonus to keep them on”

Things your boss will say to try and keep you at the company;

“I had no clue you were not happy”
“I’m really shocked and hate to hear that you are looking at another opportunity”
“Lets talk about what I can do before you make your final decision” (Your final decision should have already been made).
“We were talking about you last week at a regional meeting on how we had bigger and better things for you in the future”
“You are going to work for who” (start making bad comments about the organization you are leaving for”) never tell them the company you are leaving for until you arrive at your new job.

Never be afraid to make a career change! Of course things will be different. A new coffee machine and new way to work, all of those things will be different. Don’t think it will be easy. If you accept a counter offer it shows that your boss has emotional control over you career. Things will never be the same after accepting a counter offer. The trust will never come back or be the same. The honey moon will only last on average 90 days.  In fact, I once read a statistic that about 80% of every person who accepts a counter offer will e gone within a year.
